Cantrell earns C-USA Fall Sports Spirit of Service Award

DALLAS — UTSA senior Caleb Cantrell has earned the 2022 Conference USA Fall Sports Spirit of Service Award, the league office announced Thursday.

Cantrell is one of 11 C-USA student-athletes from the sports of men's and women's cross country, football, women's soccer and volleyball who received the award, which recognizes community service efforts.

A native of Hurst, Texas, Cantrell was heavily involved in community service during his time at UTSA. In addition to being a student-athlete representative on the UTSA Athletics Inclusive Excellence Board and UTSA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, he volunteered his time with numerous projects such as the San Antonio Food Bank, Martin Luther King Jr. Day March, any Baby Can parade, UTSA Day of Service, Cantoberfest, Superhero Comic Con & Car Show, Fiesta River Parade, UTSA Day and Pie in the Paseo to raise money for the Roadrunner Pantry. He also spoke at local elementary schools and with the Boy Scouts, and he was a Career Day presenter at a local junior high.

Cantrell recently wrapped up his playing career by helping lead the Roadrunners to an 11-3 record, their second straight C-USA Championship, a top-25 national ranking in all three major polls and their third consecutive bowl game.

Cantrell was the team's long snapper for the punt coverage unit, logging more than 40 clean snaps en route to honorable mention all-conference recognition in 2022. He posted a tackle in the 41-7 victory at Rice and had a key fumble recovery on a muffed punt inside the 5-yard line that led to a touchdown in the 41-38 overtime win at Army. He helped punter Lucas Dean average 45.0 yards on 41 punts with 19 inside the 20-yard line and 14 of 50-plus yards — including a school-record 76-yarder.

During his career, Cantrell played in 49 contests and was a second-team all-league performer in 2021 and an honorable mention pick in 2020.

Cantrell earned his bachelor's degree in communication in May 2021 and is working toward his master's degree in facility management.
