UTSA throwers highlight Friday action at Houston Invitational

HOUSTON — Led by Amaya King's runner-up finish in the women's shot put, UTSA's throwers tallied five top-eight finishes at the Houston Invitational on Friday at Yeoman Fieldhouse.
King posted a season-best mark of 15.06 meters (49-5) to secure the silver medal in her third meet as a Roadrunner. The junior transfer from Purdue opened with 14.35m (47-1) effort to grab a hold of third place and, following back-to-back fouls, posted a 13.89m (46-7) measurement in the fourth round to remain in the top three. The Mason, Ohio, native bounced back from another foul on her fifth throw with her best mark of the day to jump into second place behind Rice's Erna Gunnarsdottir (17.34m/56-10.75).
The UTSA throwers logged four additional top-eight showings on Saturday.
In the women's weight throw, Isabella Simonelli and Acacia Astwood finished in the top seven. Simonelli grabbed sixth place with a toss of 17.11m (56-1.75) and Astwood was right behind her in seventh with a 17.09m (56-1) heave.
Meanwhile, Paul Bouey placed fifth in the men's shot put after measuring 15.67m (51-5) and Jorge Ayala took eighth with a mark of 15.44m (50-8).
On the track, Savannah Lopez crossed eighth in the women's mile run with a time of 5:22.45 with Chante Dixon close behind in 10th in 5:25.15. In the 3,000m, Sabrina Goains clocked a 10:31.56 to earn 10th place.
On the men's side, Gabe Hernandez and Michael Paredes placed 12th (4:31.62) and 13th (4:32.12), respectively.
The Roadrunners will travel to New York City next Friday-Saturday, Feb. 3-4, to compete in the Scarlet Knights Open.
