Women’s Tennis set to open spring with pair of road matches

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's tennis team is set to open its spring 2023 season with two road matches this weekend. The Roadrunners head to TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday at 2 p.m., before a match against ACU in Abilene, Texas, on Saturday at 1 p.m. 
 
The Roadrunners ended last season with a 4-17 record, falling to Rice, 4-0, in the first round of the Conference USA Championship. UTSA's 2023 roster consists of five returners and three newcomers (two freshman and one transfer). Adeliya Mukhutdinova and Fatima Gutierrez join the team as true freshman, while junior Magda Tuells joins the squad after spending last season at Valdosta State. Zlatarova consistently played No. 1 singles and doubles last season, earning a 7-6 record in singles action and 6-5 in doubles play. 
 
The Horned Frogs have a 5-0 advantage over the Roadrunners in the all-time series. The teams last played each other on April 25, 2022, when UTSA fell to TCU, 4-0, in its regular season finale. TCU ended last season with a 12-14 record, falling to Kansas State, 4-2, in the first round of the Big 12 Championship to end their season. 
 
The Wildcats have a 5-1 advantage over the Roadrunners in the all-time series. The teams last played each other on Jan. 22, 2022, when UTSA fell to ACU, 4-3. ACU has already played their first match of the spring, falling 4-0 to SMU on Thursday. The Wildcats ended last season with a 9-12 record, falling to Seattle in the WAC Semifinals, 4-2, to end their season. 
 
UP NEXT: The Roadrunners head west for two games in El Paso, first facing UTEP on Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. UTSA will then play New Mexico State on Jan. 28 at 10 a.m.
