SAN ANTONIO – UTSA picked up its sixth win of the season on Sunday afternoon, downing Bethune-Cookman 90-69 at the Convocation Center.
UTSA (6-5) wrapped up its non-conference slate with a win as it will now head to Conference USA play this Thursday as it hosts North Texas. Bethune-Cookman (4-7) dropped its third straight contest after previously falling to UIW on Friday as a part of its San Antonio trip.
UTSA had five players score in double-figures for the first time in about a year as Japhet Medor (18), Isaiah Addo-Ankrah (14), John Buggs III (12), DJ Richards (12) and Josh Farmer (10). Medor led UTSA in scoring for the second straight contest, as he came off a 23-point performance at Utah. Addo-Ankrah had a season-high with 14 points, knocking down a season-best four triples. Buggs notched his sixth double-digit scoring performance of the season while Richards tallied his third straight game in double-figures.
The Rundown
Bethune-Cookman came out of the gates riding Joe French as the sharpshooter had four threes in the first half and a team-high 18 points heading into half. UTSA countered the Wildcats' early game scoring by rallying late in the first half. Once finding themselves down by seven, UTSA tied the game at 28-all with just under seven minutes to go in the half. From there, the Roadrunners outscored Bethune-Cookman 21-10 to take an 11-point lead into the half. At the break, Buggs had 12 points while Medor had 11.
The second half, unlike the first, featured no lead changes as UTSA sat comfortably in control for the remainder of the game. The Wildcats threatened once, cutting the UTSA lead down to 10 before it was pushed back out of reach as the Roadrunners went on to win by 26.
Stat of the Game
UTSA got great production from its bench today, as the secondary unit poured in 37 points, the second most of the season. Contrary to UTSA's 37 bench points, Bethune-Cookman had just eight as the starters had to do most of the heavy lifting.
