SAN MARCOS, Texas – Despite leading for three quarters of the game, the UTSA women's basketball team lost a heartbreaking battle to Texas State, 60-55, on Wednesday night at Strahan Arena.
GAME LEADERS
Three Roadrunners had double-digit scoring games – Jordyn Jenkins, Sidney Love and Kyra White. Jenkins recorded a team-high 18 points, while recording seven rebounds and a team-high four blocks. Love recorded a career-high 13 points. White matched her career-high with 12 points, also recording seven rebounds, a block, two steals and a team-high four assists. Elyssa Coleman led the team with nine rebounds, including seven on the defensive side.
UTSA led the game with 21 field goals made to Texas State's 19 field goals. The Roadrunners also held the fast break advantage, outscoring the Bobcats with 18 points to 10 points scored on fast break opportunities. UTSA held the lead for 29 minutes and 48 seconds, not allowing a tie score or lead change until Texas State took the lead with nine minutes and 14 seconds left.
BREAKDOWN OF THE GAME
After winning the opening tip, the Roadrunners started off on a hot streak, taking a hefty 13-1 advantage just over five minutes into the matchup. Freshman Love led the team with three field goals made for six points in the first quarter, scoring the opening layup with 9:02 on the clock. Coleman scored the final basket of the first quarter, putting UTSA on top by 15-7 with a second chance jump shot made with 1:09 on the clock.
The Roadrunners slightly outscored the Bobcats in the second quarter by 14 points to 13 points to take a nine-point lead to halftime. Jenkins led the team with five points scored, while recording three rebounds. Freshman Madison Cockrell trailed her with three points, all from made free throws. UTSA went to halftime with a 29-20 lead over Texas State.
Texas State turned up the heat in the second half. In the third quarter, the Bobcats outscored the Roadrunners by 19 points to 11 points and used an eight-point scoring run to cut their deficit to just one point. Jenkins led UTSA with seven points and two blocks, while White tallied up three rebounds in the third period. The Bobcats then used aa 21-point final quarter to seal the deal and the Roadrunners were unable to match the pace, scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter. Although White exploded with 10 points in the final quarter in an attempt to halt the Bobcats' breakout second half, the Roadrunners ultimately fell to Texas State by a final score of 60-55.
UTSA's record falls to 1-5, while Texas State's record improves to a 4-2.
