Farmer’s career high lifts UTSA to a third straight season-opening victory

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA defeated Trinity in its 2022-23 lid-lifter 74-47 to pick up its third-straight season-opening victory behind a career-high performance from sophomore forward Josh Farmer on Monday night at the Convocation Center.

UTSA (1-0) struggled shooting early but found its footing in the second half to breeze past the Trinity Tigers in Monday's season-opening competition. The Roadrunners held the Tigers to just 30.5 percent shooting from the field on their way to a 1-0 record.

Farmer, a Houston native, poured in a career-high 17 points on 8-13 shooting and 12 rebounds to notch his first-ever double-double. His points and rebounds were both benchmarks for the young wing.

The Rundown
The two Texas teams struggled to score early as ten minutes into the game the score stood at 13-12 in favor of the Roadrunners. UTSA started to find its shooting stroke a bit, going on a 16-5 run to close the first half. UTSA carried its late first-half scoring into the second stanza, expanding on its lead and pushing the game to 50-29 about halfway through the half. From there on, the Roadrunners went into cruise control and went on to win the game 74-47.

No Roadrunner played more than 25 minutes and every available player contributed on the evening. Outside of Farmer's career night, senior Jacob Germany also had a strong performance. The Kingston, Okla. native tallied 15 points and six boards, providing the second most points from any Roadrunner.

Newcomer Japhet Medor stuffed the stat sheet as he had five points, seven assists and five rebounds. Fellow newcomer John Buggs III went for six points on two three-pointers and paired three rebounds with his production from beyond the arc. Buggs recorded the best +/- of any Roadrunner and UTSA showed it, playing more in control with Buggs on the floor.

The Roadrunner bench scored 42 of their 74, headlined by Farmer and fellow sophomore Lamin Sabally. Sabally went for six points and eight boards, providing critical energy for the team. Of Sabally's eight rebounds, six were offensive and led to second-chance points.

Stat of the Game
The Roadrunners never found themselves in a hole Monday evening, as they never trailed through the 40-minute contest. UTSA led for 38 minutes and was tied for two but never trailed and the result was never in question.

Quotable
Jacob Germany on Josh Farmer: "I've been telling you guys all summer how much better Josh has gotten. I'm really proud of him and the work showed tonight."
