NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The UTSA women's basketball team opens its 2022-23 campaign on the road as the Roadrunners face SFA on Monday. Tip-off for the season opener is set for 5:30 p.m. (CT) and will be streamed on ESPN+.
NEW 'RUNNERS ON THE BLOCK
UTSA returns six players – Elyssa Coleman, Hailey Atwood, Queen Ulabo, Deborah Nwakamma, Kyleigh McGuire and Kennedy Harrell — for the second season of the Karen Aston era.
The Roadrunners welcome eight newcomers – three transfers and five true freshman. Two transfers – Jordyn Jenkins and Kyra White – hail from USC, while Nissa Sam-Grant joins the squad from Panola College. A handful of true freshman also join the 2022-23 roster – Alexis Parker, Siena Guttadauro, Madison Cockrell, Sidney Love and Maya Linton.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Roadrunners play a heavy road schedule this season, playing 17 away games. Their away schedule is highlighted by a trip to Fort Worth to face Big 12 opponent TCU on Nov. 16, battle of I-35 at Texas State on Nov. 30, a cross-town rivalry game at UIW on Dec. 15, and a matchup at Houston on Dec. 19. The Roadrunners are also set to play in the Las Vegas Invitational during Thanksgiving break on Nov. 25-26, facing Missouri State and St. John's
UTSA will play at home 12 times this season. Their home opener is set for Nov. 20 against Abilene Christian. The Roadrunners will play only two non-conference games at home – their home opener against Abilene Christian on Nov. 20 and a matchup against Big Sky Conference's Idaho on Dec. 10. The squad will open up conference play at home against Louisiana Tech on Dec. 29, before hosting UAB on New Year's Eve.
LET'S GO 2-1-0
The 2022-23 roster features three San Antonio area natives. Kyra White is the veteran player of the group, joining the Roadrunners after playing the last three season for the Pac 12's USC. A Judson High School product, White posted 131 rebounds, 49 steals, 25 blocks and 127 assists for the Trojans in her time there.
The other two San Antonio natives are true freshman – Alexis Parker from Brandeis High School and Sidney Love from Steele High School.
JINKIES FOR JENKINS
USC transfer Jordyn Jenkins hasn't played a minute on the court for the Roadrunners yet, but she is already making an impact.
She was named to the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Preseason Watch List, the first UTSA athlete to be named to the elite list since its inception in 2020. Just a day after that, the Kent, Wash., native was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team
