Wehman guides UTSA to ninth place at Saint Mary’s Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. —Jack Wehman finished in the top 15 to guide the UTSA men's golf team to ninth place at the Saint Mary's Invitational, which wrapped up on Wednesday at Poppy Hills Golf Course (par 71/7,091 yards).
 
Wehman tied for 12th place with a 2-over-par 213 to help the Roadrunners post an 883 (295-294-294) and finish two shots ahead of Washington State (885) and four in front of No. 39 BYU (887). UTSA was only two strokes behind Northern Illinois and 10 back of seventh-place Fresno State in the 16-team field.
 
Wehman turned in his top finish of the season on the strength of 11 birdies for the week. After opening with an even-par 71 on Monday, the sophomore from Austin fired a season-best 70 on Tuesday and then closed with a 74 today that featured three birdies. He was only one shot out of a tie for ninth and two behind a deadlock for seventh place.
 
Hunter Bott recorded the low round of the final day with a 1-over 72 that was highlighted by four birdies, including three on the front nine. The senior from Montgomery climbed eight spots on the final day and settled into a tie for 34th at 8-over 221 (73-76-72).
 
Christian Fanfelle posted a 2-over 73 in the final round, writing down a pair of birdies and an eagle on the 515-yard, par-5 18th hole. The senior from San Antonio leaped 12 places into a tie for 55th at 13-over 226 (73-80-73).
 
David Harrison was one shot behind Fanfelle with a share of 58th at 14-over 227. The senior from Trophy Club bounced back from a 78 on Monday with a 74 followed by a 75 today that included a pair of birdies.
 
Brayden Bare rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 77th with a 233 (81-74-78).
 
San Diego captured the team title with a 7-under 845, followed by No. 18 Colorado State (861), Saint Mary's (864), Loyola Marymount (868) and Santa Clara (871) in the top five.
 
Fresno State's Matthew Manganello carded a 7-under 206 (66-70-70) to win the individual crown.
 
The Roadrunners will open the spring slate on Jan. 30-31 at the Sea Best Invitational at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
