DALLAS — UTSA senior place-kicker Jared Sackett has been named Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week for a school-record fifth time this season, the league office announced Monday.
Sackett kicked the game-winning field goal with three seconds left to complete UTSA's historic 34-31 comeback victory over UTEP on Saturday in San Antonio. The senior split the uprights from 28 yards to cap the Roadrunners' final drive, which started with 4:03 left on the clock and the score tied at 31-all.
Sackett also drilled a career long-tying 51-yarder late in the third quarter to pull UTSA to within one score after trailing 24-0 in the first half and 31-14 early in the second half.
With his two makes, the Fort Worth native took over sole possession of first place on the program's career field goals chart with 52, and he improved to 19 of 24 this season. He also made all four extra points and had touchbacks on five of his seven kickoffs in the win over the Miners that wrapped up a perfect 8-0 league ledger and improved UTSA to 10-2 overall with its ninth straight victory.
His five awards this season are a school record and ups his career tally to seven. This marks the ninth C-USA player of the week accolade collected by a UTSA player this season, as quarterback Frank Harris received the offensive award four times.
UAB running back DeWayne McBride earned the offensive player of the week nod and Middle Tennessee defensive back Jakobe Thomas picked up the defensive honor. The C-USA Player of the Week awards are presented by Blenders Eyewear.
No. 23 UTSA will host North Texas in the 2022 Ryan C-USA Championship Game this Friday, Dec. 2. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Alamodome and the game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network. Fans can purchase tickets by visiting ticketmaster.com or the Alamodome Box Office during their normal business hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.
