SAN ANTONIO – UTSA dropped Sunday night's contest to Dartmouth in overtime, 88-87, despite a season-high 27-point outing from senior big man Jacob Germany. Germany's performance pushed him over the 1,000-point threshold, making him just the 18th Roadrunner to ever achieve the feat.
UTSA (4-3) dropped its second game of the 210 San Antonio Shootout presented by Drury Hotels in an overtime bout with Dartmouth (2-4). After overcoming a seven-point halftime deficit, UTSA forced an extra period of play where it staked an early 70-68 advantage. UTSA would extend its lead to four, 75-71, before the Big Green ended the contest on a 7-2 run to claim victory.
Germany, UTSA's four-year mainstay, had a stellar performance on the night, scoring a season-high 27 points on 10-13 shooting to pair with 13 rebounds for his first double-double of the 2022 campaign. Germany's 27 points are the second most by a Roadrunner this season and it was the fourth time he'd scored in double figures this year. The Roadrunners also got good production from its bench as both DJ Richards and Erik Czumbel had 13 points. Czumbel's 13 points were his highest of the season. Richards' seven boards were the second most on the team. Junior Isaiah Addo-Ankrah played a team-high 39 minutes and poured in 11 points as he was the fourth Roadrunner to score in double-figures.
The Rundown
UTSA began the contest with a new starting five as Aleu Aleu made his fifth career start. Both teams found themselves knotted at six after a few minutes of action. Dartmouth then converted a layup and banged a triple to go up five, 11-6. Later in the first half, UTSA battled adversity as starting point guard Japhet Medor rolled his ankle and had to be subbed out. With Medor out, Christian Tucker and Czumbel were tasked with filling in ball-handling duties. UTSA was closing the half strong, getting the Dartmouth lead down to 29-28, however, the Big Green had one last first-half push remaining and went into the half up 25-28.
Dartmouth extended its lead to nine early in the second half, pushing the advantage to 37-28 off of a Brandon Mitchell-Day layup. UTSA stormed back, rattling off a 12-3 run in large part to Germany who scored six of the 12. After tying the game, UTSA capped the run by taking the lead off of a Jacob Germany fast break flush, 42-40. After going up 45-42, UTSA saw the Big Green score 15 points in four minutes to take a 57-49 lead. UTSA would rally to retie the contest and the two teams traded blows until eventually ending regulation tied at 68. Czumbel had a chance at the buzzer but his free-throw line jumper was no good.
In overtime, UTSA struck first off of a Germany hook shot to take a two-point 70-68 lead. From there UTSA held the lead, which ballooned to as large as four, until the final minute where Dartmouth had a fastbreak layup to go up 78-77. The Roadrunners had the ball with nine seconds remaining and had a play for Addo-Ankrah called but the junior's shot was off and the game ended.
Stat of the Game
Dartmouth controlled the lead for 35 minutes of tonight's action, not allowing the Roadrunners much chance to claim any momentum. Other than that, the stats for both teams were mostly even.
