UTSA falls in heartbreaker against St. John’s

LAS VEGAS – The UTSA women's basketball team closed the Las Vegas Invitational with a heartbreaking close loss to the St. John's Red Storm, 69-64, on Saturday afternoon at The Mirage.
 
GAME LEADERS
Jordyn Jenkins led the Roadrunners with 25 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Sidney Love collected 12 points with a team-high five assists. UTSA held a 40 percent field goal advantage, shooting 25 field goals to the Red Storm's 20. The Roadrunners led in many categories, including 42 total rebounds, 25 defensive rebounds, 17 offensive rebounds, 30 points in the paint, 18 points off turnovers and 17 second-chance points. 
 
BREAKDOWN OF THE GAME
Jenkins opened up scoring in the first quarter with a three-point jumper and a layup shortly after, giving the the Roadrunners an early 5-0 advantage less than a minute into the game. St. John's responded shortly after, then beginning a back-and-forth battle. Love tied the game up at 9-9 with 6:02 on the clock with a fast break layup in the paint. The Red Storm used a nine-point scoring run to jump out to a 24-14 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Roadrunners outscored the Red Storm by 13 points to 12 points in the second quarter, battling their way to a nine-point deficit 36-27) by halftime. 
 
St. John's shot well from behind the arc throughout the game, but four three-pointers during the third quarter alone helped them just out to a 12-point lead after 30 minutes of action. The fourth quarter came and it was grind time for UTSA. The Roadrunners battled to a three-point deficit twice during the fourth quarter, using a three-pointer by Jenkins with 26 seconds on the clock, then using a driving layup by Jenkins just 16 seconds later. UTSA battled until the last millisecond, but was unable to overtake St. John's as the Roadrunners fell to the Red Storm by a final score of 69-64. 
 
UTSA's record falls to 1-4, while St. John's' record improves to an even 2-2.
 
UP NEXT: The Roadrunners return to the Lone Star State to face Texas State on Nov. 30 in San Marcos, Texas. Tip-off for the battle of I-35 matchup is set for 7 p.m. (CT).
