TYLER, Texas — UTSA senior Frank Harris on Wednesday was named a semifinalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award for the second straight season.
Harris is one of 16 semifinalists for the award, which recognizes the top offensive player in college football with ties to the state of Texas. This marks the third consecutive year that a Roadrunner has landed on the award's semifinalist list, as All-America running back Sincere McCormick was a finalist in 2020 and 2021.
Finalists will be announced on Dec. 13 and the winner will be unveiled at an awards banquet on Jan. 11, 2023, in Tyler.
The fan vote for the semifinalists round begins at 4 p.m. today and runs through noon on Sunday, Dec. 11. Visit www.earlcampbellaward.com to vote daily.
Harris, who last week was tabbed to the Davey O'Brien Award semifinalist list, has started all 11 games under center for the 25th-ranked Roadrunners, leading them to a 9-2 overall record and a perfect 7-0 league mark to secure the Conference USA regular season title and the right to host the C-USA Championship Game on Friday, Dec. 2.
The Schertz Clemens High School product has completed 257 of 370 passes (.695) for 3,142 yards and 24 touchdowns this season. He has added 525 yards and eight scores on the ground, putting him sixth nationally in total offense at 333.4 yards per game. A four-time C-USA Offensive Player of the Week honoree and the league's preseason player of the year, he owns five 300-yard passing games this fall including a school-record 414 in the 45-30 win at Middle Tennessee.
Harris owns a 29-10 record as UTSA's starting QB and more than 30 school records. He has thrown for 8,435 yards and 66 touchdowns on 745-of-1,110 passing (.671) — all program records — and rushed for 1,745 yards and 23 TDs, the most in a career by a UTSA quarterback. In fact, he is one of only eight active FBS quarterbacks with 8,000 or more passing yards and 1,700-plus rushing yards.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year Division 1 Texas college.
