SAN ANTONIO – UTSA will welcome longtime rival Texas State to the Convocation Center this Thursday, Nov. 17, in a meeting between two 2-1 teams. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on CUSA.tv and broadcast on Ticket 760 AM.
The Roadrunners (2-1) will look to move to 4-1 against the Bobcats during the Steve Henson era. The two I-35 schools have not met on the hardwood since December of 2019 when UTSA pulled off a six-point victory. Texas State (2-1) has had a productive first couple of games playing against solid programs. The Bobcats lost at Washington State on opening night and are coming off a road win at Rhode Island.
UTSA is looking to extend a three-game home win streak that dates back to last season as it hosts Texas State. The Roadrunners have had a lot of new faces leading the way, having lost four of its top five performers from last season.
Leading the Roadrunners
UTSA has been led on offense by fourth-year big man Jacob Germany who is averaging 12.7 points per contest. Germany, a 2021-22 Conference USA All-Conference Honorable Mention, adds four rebounds per game to go along with 1.3 blocks per game.
Newcomers have been consistently present in UTSA's success this season as three of the top five contributors are in their first season with the Roadrunners. John Buggs III is second on the team in points per game (9.0) and is stroking it to 36.8% from beyond the arc. Fellow newcomer, freshman DJ Richards, is shooting 40% from three-point land on 6/15 shooting. Japhet Medor chips in 6.7 points per game and averages 4.3 assists per contest to lead the team.
Sophomore Josh Farmer has made a leap in his second season with the Roadrunners. In the season opener, Farmer recorded a double-double with a career-high 17 points and 12 boards. He made his first career start against St. Mary's and leads the team in rebounding, averaging eight a game.
Overall, the Roadrunners are shooting 40.1 percent as a team from the field and holding foes to 38.4 percent. UTSA averages 65 points, 41.3 rebounds, 13 assists, seven steals and 6.3 blocks per game as a team.
Scouting Texas State
The Bobcats are led by fifth-year guard Mason Harrell. The Oklahoma native has been averaging 18.7 points per game. Harrell and forward Tyrel Morgan make up for just about 40% of Texas State's total rebounds as Morgan is the third-leading scorer on the team.
Texas State is shooting 46.5 percent from the field and just a measly 22.2 percent from beyond the arc. Bobcat opponents are firing at a 44.1% clip and are shooting 32.4 percent from the three-point line.
Series History
UTSA holds a 36-25 advantage over Texas State in a series that dates all the way back to 1985. UTSA is 17-14 against the Bobcats in games played at the Convocation Center. UTSA has won three of the last four meetings between the schools including the last contest in 2019, defeating Texas State 77-71.
