BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Amanda Ifeanyi had her second straight match hitting over .400 with at least nine kills but it wasn't enough as No. 25 Western Kentucky downed UTSA in three straight sets Sunday afternoon at Diddle Arena.
UTSA (7-10, 2-3) dropped its third Conference USA match of the season as they fell to No. 25 WKU (17-2, 5-0) in three sets. Western Kentucky has now won 49 straight C-USA matches, having not dropped a match since 2018.
Western Kentucky was the second nationally ranked Conference USA opponent that UTSA has played against this season, having also played (at the time) No. 23 Rice.
First Set (WKU: 25-18: UTSA)
UTSA came out swinging early, holding the early lead over No. 25 WKU, 11-9. Western Kentucky didn't take long to start flexing its nationally ranked muscle though as the Hilltoppers would go on a 16-7 run and take the first set. Alicia Coppedge was a bright spot for UTSA in the first set as the middle blocker notched four kills at a .444 clip.
Second Set (WKU: 25-17: UTSA)
After trading early points, Western Kentucky was able to jump out to a 9-5 lead, forcing a UTSA timeout. The Hilltoppers came out of the Roadrunner timeout and kept their foot on the gas, going on a 6-2 run and forcing another UTSA timeout. WKU would go on to win the set 25-17 and take a 2-0 set lead. Coppedge, Ifeanyi and Hunter Coppola each had two kills in the set for UTSA.
Third Set (WKU: 25-19: UTSA)
The Hilltoppers kept their momentum going into the third set, racing out to a 16-8 lead. UTSA was able to pull back within five, cutting the set to 22-17. However, Western Kentucky was able to close out UTSA and secure the three-set victory. Ifeanyi did the majority of her damage in the third set as the middle blocker tallied six kills on a .556 clip.
