SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA soccer team clinched their highest seed in the conference tournament in program history, earning the No. 6 seed with a 1-0 win over UTEP on Friday night at Park West Athletics Complex.
With the win, the Roadrunners ended their regular season in historic fashion. UTSA tied the program record for most wins in conference play (2019), since joining the Conference USA in 2013. The squad also earned the most points (15) in C-USA play in program history. Most importantly for the upcoming conference tournament, the Roadrunners earned their highest conference finish (6th).
The Roadrunners outshot the Miners by 15 shots (six on target) to eight shots (four on goal). UTSA also led UTEP with nine corner kicks to two corners. The Roadrunners held a 54 percent possession advantage through the 90 minutes. Anna Sutter led UTSA with three shots, including the game-winning goal.
Through the first 45 minutes of the match, the Roadrunners fired off nine shots while keeping the Miners to just a pair of shots. UTSA came off strong as they fired off three shots within the first two minutes. In the 18 th minute, Marlee Fray earned a free kick which she then launched towards the goal but the Miners' goalkeeper Mariah Scott saved the ball which she deflected back into action. Sutter then fired the ball in to give the Roadrunners the 1-0 advantage.
The Miners came out stronger in the second half as they fired off six shots and the Roadrunners countered with the same. Despite the second 90 minutes getting a little more aggressive on the pitch, UTSA held strong to take the 1-0 win over UTEP and secure its spot as the six seed in the C-USA Tournament.
UTSA ends its regular season with a 9-5-4 overall (4-3-3 in C-USA action), while UTEP ends its season with an overall record of 4-11-3 and 1-7-2 in conference action. With the win, the Roadrunners secures their spot as the sixth seed going into the Conference USA Tournament. UTEP ends its season with five points, finishing in ninth - just one spot shy of making the conference tournament.
