UTSA men finish fifth, women sixth at C-USA Championships

DENTON, Texas — Led by a pair of top-20 finishes, the UTSA men finished fifth at the Conference USA Cross Country Championships, while the women placed sixth behind a trio of top-30 showings on Saturday morning at Pioneer Soccer Park. 
 
Colton Stunkard crossed in 15th place and Jake Smith was 18th, as both earned third-team all-conference honors in guiding the men to their best team finish since a runner-up effort at the 2011 Southland Conference Championships. 
 
The Roadrunners scored 121 points for fifth, ending up ahead of North Texas (139), FIU (210), WKU (247) and Florida Atlantic (259). UTSA was just behind Rice (107) in the field won by Charlotte (31), followed by UTEP (62) and Middle Tennessee (69).
 
Meanwhile, Luzaan De Wit, Madi Henry and Abby Balli finished in the top 30 to lead the women to their best league finish since winning the 2013 C-USA crown. 
 
UTSA tallied 158 points for a slim sixth-place showing behind UAB (156) and FIU (142). The Roadrunners placed ahead of Florida Atlantic (162), UTEP (206), WKU (265), North Texas (285) and Louisiana Tech (326). Charlotte (26) claimed the team title with 26 points, followed by Middle Tennessee (54), and Rice (79) in the top three.
 
Stunkard, a sophomore transfer from Texas City, covered the men's 8,000-meter trail in a time of 25:02.3 to finish 15th while Smith, a senior from Arizona, was close behind in 18th with a 25:19.1 clocking.
 
Spencer Herbstritt was the third Roadrunner to cross, placing 27th with a 26:12.0, and Idol Ramon timed a 26:34.8 for 33rd.
 
Gabe Hernandez and Landon Blankenship finished 36th (26:48.9) and 37th (26:56.5), respectively, while Harrison Wade was 41st (27:08.3) and O.J. Ruiz placed 44th (27:21.2) Caden Cunningham rounded out the men's lineup in 53rd (28:19.9).
 
De Wit, a transfer from South Africa, led a trio of UTSA women in the top 30 by covering the 6k loop in a time of 22:52.4 for 27th.
 
Henry, a senior transfer from New Braunfels, was right behind her teammate in 28th with a 22:56.9 clocking, while Balli, a senior from Pasadena, crossed 29th in 22:57.6.
 
Chante Dixon was the fourth UTSA finisher in the women's race, placing 41st with a time of 23:30.0.
 
Brooke Veltman and Savannah Lopez finished 46th (23:41.8) and 49th (23:58.5), respectively, and Lily Morrill was 58th (24:34.3).
 
The Roadrunners are scheduled to compete in the NCAA South Central Regional on Friday, Nov. 11, in Bryan-College Station.
