SAN MARCOS, Texas — Camryn Carreon fired a 1-over-par 146 to lead the UTSA women's golf team on the opening day of the Jim West Challenge, which teed off on Sunday at Kissing Tree Golf Club (par 72/6,163 yards).
Carreon is part of a seven-way tie for 24th place through 36 holes, while the Roadrunners are in 14th with one round left to play on Monday.
Carreon opened the event with a 2-over 74 that featured birdies on the 486-yard, par-5 fifth and 280-yard, par-4 ninth holes. The San Antonio native posted an even-par 72 in the afternoon on the strength of three more birdies, including back-to-back on Nos. 17-18.
Meanwhile, UTSA turned in a pair of 301s on the 36-hole day and is six shots ahead of Missouri and seven behind UNLV in the field that includes eight nationally ranked teams.
Daniela Abonce led the Roadrunners in the first round with a 1-under 71, the team's low score of the day. The freshman from Mexico recorded seven birdies on Sunday with five coming in the first round. She posted a 76 in the afternoon and is tied for 31st at 3-over 147.
Morgan Ellison has a share of 61st after posting a 9-over 153. The sophomore out of Georgia carded rounds of 76 and 77 behind six birdies on Sunday.
Olivia Williams and Lauren Rios round out the UTSA lineup in 71st (80-76—156) and 79th (84-80—164), respectively.
No. 27 Oklahoma State is 9-under par and owns a nine-shot lead after day one, with No. 21 SMU (-2), No. 42 Tulsa, 25th-ranked Houston (+1) and No. 34 Texas Tech (+3) in the top five in the team standings.
Oklahoma State's Han-Hsuan Yu and TCU's Caitlyn Macnab are tied for the individual lead at 6-under 136.
The final round is slated for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Monday and the Roadrunners will be paired with Missouri and UNLV. ESPN+ will air coverage starting at 9 a.m. Monday.
