UTSA stumbles in first day of weekend tournament

LAFAYETTE, La. – UTSA fell in both of its matches in the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic on Friday.

The Roadrunners began the day squaring off with in-state school UTRGV in the early morning and fell to the Vaqueros 3-0. Later in the afternoon, UTSA played its second match of the day against NDSU where they lost in three straight sets.

UTSA (1-4) now heads into the final day of the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic searching for its first win of the tournament and will meet up with tournament host Louisiana Lafayette at noon tomorrow, Sept. 3.

Game One (UTSA: 0-3: UTRGV)
In the first game, UTSA found itself with a balanced scoring attack, as six different Roadrunners notched four or more kills. However, UTRGV (4-1) proved too much to handle as it would go on to win in three sets. The Vaqueros were led by Sarah Cruz who totaled 21 kills on the day, leading the way for the Vaqueros sweep.

The first match was tightly contested thanks to nine errors on UTRGV's part which allowed UTSA to stay in the set until UTRGV pulled away late. The second set saw a much closer contest as the Roadrunners were able to get the Vaqueros to match point at 24-23. UTRGV would then go on a 3-0 run to end the game and take set two. The Vaqueros carried that late set two momentum into the third and won the final set by their largest margin, 25-19.

Game Two (UTSA: 0-3: NDSU)
The UTSA offensive attack fared slightly better in its second match of the day; however, the Roadrunners suffered the same fate as before, a loss. Cansu Günaydin and Amanda Ifeanyi each had nine kills and Mekaila Aupiu had 11 assists to lead the Roadrunner offense.

North Dakota State (4-1) got out of the gates fast in the first set and would win set one by six, its largest set win margin of the day. In set two, NDSU would out attack UTSA .360 to .091 which was the difference in set two. The Bison would carry their early match momentum into the third and final set and displaced UTSA, winning set three 25-21.
