ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Hunter Bott and Christian Fanfelle are in the top 25 and the UTSA men's golf team is in a tie for 10th place after the first two rounds of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, which got underway Friday at UNM Championship Course (par 72/7,546 yards).
Bott is tied for 17th place at 1-under-par 143 and Fanfelle is one shot behind his teammate in a tie for 21st at even par to help the Roadrunners settle into a tie with Hawaii for 10th at 12-over 588. UTSA carded rounds of 295 and 293 on Friday and stands just two shots behind Colorado and New Mexico State and six back of Wyoming. The Roadrunners are two strokes ahead of San Francisco and three in front of Nebraska in the 19-team field led by San Diego State at 17-under.
Bott opened the 54-hole event with a 1-under 71 that featured birdies on the 428-yard, par-4 sixth and the 575-yard, par-5 14th holes. The senior from Montgomery, Texas, posted an even-par 72 in the afternoon on the strength of three more birdies, including a pair as part of a 35 on the front side. He will enter the final round only three shots out of the top 10.
Fanfelle also fired a 1-under 71 in the first round, posting four birdies with three on the front nine to start his weekend. The senior from San Antonio turned in a 73 in the afternoon after writing down five more birdies to give him a team-high nine so far, the seventh-best total in the field of 104 players.
Jack Wehman has a share of 54th at 5-over 149. The sophomore from Austin bounced back from a 77 in the opening round with a 72 that was headlined by five birdies.
Carson Gallaher is in a tie for 79th after posting a pair of 76s, while David Harrison is in 92nd (77-78—155).
The final round is slated for an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start.
