UTSA victorious in Roadrunner Classic finale

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA concluded their non-conference schedule and the Roadrunner Classic, presented by Courtyard Marriot, with a 3-1 win over crosstown rival UIW on Saturday afternoon.

The Roadrunners closed out the Roadrunner Classic going 2-1 in the tournament, improving their overall record to 5-7. The Cardinals ended the tournament going 0-3, falling to a 1-9 overall record.

Rutgers transfer Cansu Günaydin led all players with 19 kills and 22.5 points, as well as two service aces. Amanda Ifeanyi led the team with five blocks. Freshman libero Ava Camacho recorded 31 digs and two service aces.

First Set (UIW: 29-27: UTSA)
The lead went back and forth for most of the first set, neither team getting out to more than a two-point lead through the entire set. Günaydin led the Roadrunners in the first set with one service ace and 12 kills. After being down a point, the Cardinals took the set by recording two kills and taking advantage of an attack error.

Second Set (UIW: 21-25: UTSA)
After falling in the first set, the Roadrunners brought a new-found fire to the second set as it jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. Although UIW tied the set twice, UTSA didn't allow the Cardinals the lead. Ifeanyi led the Roadrunners with six kills in the set, scoring the winning 25th point.

Third Set (UIW: 21-25: UTSA)
UTSA ended the third set with the same score as the second, going on a five point run to make the score 21-16. Ifeanyi and Kelsey Carpenter each had three kills to lead the Roadrunners. A kill by Günaydin sealed the third set win for UTSA.

Fourth Set (UIW: 16-25: UTSA)
The fourth set started on a back-and-forth battle, before the Cardinals went on a four-point run to take the lead at 6-3. The Roadrunners started inching their way back, going on seven two-point runs, a three-point run and a four-point run that solidified the set win. With UTSA leading 21-16 at the end of the set, kills by Karolina Krueger, Ifeanyi and Günaydin, as well as an attack error by UIW's Kyla Malone helped get the Roadrunners to the 25 points needed to win. Not allowing UIW a single point during that run, UTSA took the 25-16 fourth set victory to win the match 3-1 overall.
