CHOUDRANT, La. — Christian Fanfelle and David Harrison placed in the top 20 individuals to guide the UTSA men's golf team to a seventh-place finish at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, which wrapped up on Tuesday at Squire Creek Golf Club (par 72/7,105 yards).
Fanfelle finished in a tie for 12th place 6-under par and Harrison grabbed a share of 19th at 4-under to help the Roadrunners end up in seventh with a 7-under 857 (277-292-288). UTSA finished one shot ahead of Troy and three strokes in front of a tie between SMU and South Alabama in the 23-team field.
Fanfelle carded his second 3-under 69 of the tournament in Tuesday's final round to move into a tie for 12th with a 6-under 210, matching the best 54-hole score of his collegiate career posted at this course a year ago. The senior from San Antonio recorded four birdies and an eagle on the 388-yard, par-4 first hole to climb seven places in the individual standings on the final day. His two sub-70 scorecards give him 14 for his career, third-most in program history.
Harrison closed out his week with a 1-over 73 that featured a trio of birdies, giving him a team-high 14 for the tournament. The senior from Byron Nelson High School finished with a 4-under 212, tying his top 54-hole score and marking the best tally versus par of his collegiate career.
Hunter Bott posted a 1-over 217 to finish in a tie for 52nd. The Montgomery, Texas, native opened with a 4-under 68 followed by a 75 and a 74 that was highlighted by three birdies to push his total to 11 for the tournament.
Jack Wehman fired an even-par on the strength of three birdies — all on the front nine — in the final round. The Austin native finished with a share of 60th at 2-over 218 (72-74-72).
Patrick Kahanek rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 99th at 9-over 225. The second-year player had three birdies during a final-round 74 after opening with a 76-75—151.
Southern Miss held off Middle Tennessee by one shot to claim the team title at 28-under par, while ULM (-25), LSU (-24), Houston (-10) and host Louisiana Tech (-9) closed out the top six teams.
Thongpipat Rattanayanon of Southern Miss captured individual medalist honors with an 11-under 205 (69-66-70).
The Roadrunners will return to the course on Sept. 23-24 at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
