CHOUDRANT, La. — Paced by a trio of sub-70 scorecards, the UTSA men's golf team is in fourth place and only three shots off the lead after the opening day of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate on Sunday at Squire Creek Golf Club (par 72/7,105 yards).
Hunter Bott and David Harrison each carded a 4-under-par 68 and Christian Fanfelle fired a 69 to help the Roadrunners record an 11-under 277, which is tied for the seventh-best round in program history.
UTSA is just three strokes behind day-one leader ULM, which posted a 14-under 274. Houston and host Louisiana Tech are tied for second at 12-under 276 in the 23-team field, while the Roadrunners are just ahead of a three-way tie at 10-under 278 for fifth place between LSU, Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss.
Bott and Harrison are part of an eight-way tie for eighth place in the 124-man field, three shots off the pace set by LSU's Garrett Barber with his opening-round 65.
Bott turned in the ninth sub-70 round of his UTSA career with a 68. The Montgomery, Texas, native posted a team-high six birdies, including three in a row on Nos. 16-18, en route to his best score since a 68 in the final round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic this past April.
Meanwhile, Harrison broke 70 for the first time as a Roadrunner with his 68 on Sunday. A native of Trophy Club, Texas, he logged five birdies and an eagle on the 546-yard, par-5 ninth hole while improving his previous collegiate career best of 70 done six times previously, most recently on the final day of the 2022 Wyoming Cowboy Classic.
Fanfelle posted his 13th career sub-70 round, good for a tie for third place in the UTSA record book. The super senior from San Antonio wrote down four birdies and has a share of 16th place at 3-under with 36 holes left to play.
Jack Wehman provided the other counting score for the Roadrunners with an even-par 72. The sophomore from Austin had three birdies in his opening round and is tied for 54th.
Patrick Kahanek posted a 76 and is tied for 102nd.
The second round is set for Monday and the Roadrunners will tee off from No. 10 beginning at 11:50 a.m.
