UTSA to tee off fall campaign at Jim Rivers Intercollegiate

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will tee off the fall campaign and the first year under head coach Matt Werneck on Sunday-Tuesday, Sept. 11-12, at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate in Choudrant, Louisiana.

The Roadrunners will line up against host Louisiana Tech, Abilene Christian, Central Arkansas, Francis Marion, High Point, Houston, Kennesaw State, Lamar, Louisiana, LSU, Middle Tennessee, Missouri State, North Texas, Nicholls, Oral Roberts, Rice, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy and ULM in the three-day, 54-hole, stroke-play event held at Squire Creek Golf Club (par 72/7,105 yards).

UTSA registered a runner-up finish at last year's Jim Rivers Intercollegiate behind top-five showings from Hunter Bott and Christian Fanfelle. Bott claimed sole possession of fourth place with a 7-under-par 209 while Fanfelle was one shot back in a tie for fifth at 6-under 210 to lead the Roadrunners to a 16-under 848 (290-272-286), three shots ahead of Southern Miss and only seven back of team champion LSU.

The Roadrunners return six veterans from last year's team that finished as the Conference USA runner-up and posted four top-five finishes overall, including winning the 2021 Lone Star Invitational at TPC San Antonio's Oaks Course.

Bott logged four top-five finishes in 2021-22, highlighted by sharing medalist honors with Michael Rome at the Lonie Star Invitational. The senior from Montgomery, Texas, earned all-tournament honors at the C-USA Championship after placing fourth with a 3-under 213 (69-72-72).

Fanfelle, a two-time all-conference performer, registered a trio of top 10s in 2021-22, headlined by his fifth-place effort at the Jim Rivers. The San Antonio native tied for eighth at the Lone Star Invitational and again at the Bentwater Intercollegiate.

David Harrison and Jack Wehman were mainstays in the UTSA lineup last season and are back for another year in the blue and orange. A native of Trophy Club, Texas, Harrison posted a pair of top-30 showings featuring a tie for 13th at the Lone Star Invitational. Wehman, who played at Austin Vandegrift High School under Wernecke for part of his prep career, also had two top-30 efforts including grabbing a share of eighth at the Lone Star.

Carson Gallaher and Patrick Kahanek also are back after playing in three and four tournaments, respectively, last season.

The Roadrunners welcome one newcomer, Brayden Bare from Waco Midway High School. A state qualifier and four-year letterman, he won seven individual titles as a prepster including back-to-back regional crowns.
