UTSA earns first Power Five win in program history

SAN ANTONIO – For the first time in program history, the UTSA soccer team earned its first win over a Power Five opponent after defeating the Big 12's Kansas State by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Park West Athletics Complex.

The first half of the match was dominated by the Roadrunners as UTSA fired off seven shots (two on target) and Kansas State countered with two shots. The possession was split 51 to 49 to the advantage of the Roadrunners through the first 45 minutes of action.

Despite the even possession percentage, what made the difference was where that possession was spent. When the Roadrunners had the ball, they spent 30 percent of that time in their attacking fourth of the pitch, while Kansas State spent 10 percent of their possession time in their attacking area.

In the sixth minute, UTSA earned their second corner kick in less than a minute span. Kiran Singh took both corners and cashed in on the second chance. Launching the corner in, it hit the left goal post and found its way into the net to give the Roadrunners an early 1-0 advantage.

UTSA stayed aggressive through the rest of the first half but did not find the back of the net again, carrying a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Kansas State started to put more of a fight and the pace began to pick up in the second half. The Wildcats recorded six shots, while the Roadrunners took eight shots in the second half. The Wildcats tied the game at 1-1 in the 58th minute.

The next 30 minutes saw 11 fouls and seven shots as both the Wildcats and Roadrunners fought to break the tie and take the lead. A little over two minutes left in the match, the Roadrunners broke away to regain the advantage. As the ball bounced around near the box, Singh fed a ball to Sasjah Dade who then launched the ball to the left side of the net past the diving Kansas State goalkeeper. UTSA carried the 2-1 lead through the last few minutes to earn their first win over a Power 5 program in program history.

UTSA outshot Kansas State by 15 shots (five on target) to eight shots (one on goal). Dade led the Roadrunners with four shots and the game-winning goal.  UTSA's record improves to 3-0-1, while Kansas State's record falls to 1-2-1.
