Roadrunners to host Texas Southern in Sunday matchup

SAN ANTONIO – Coming off a 0-0 season-opening draw against Houston Baptist, UTSA will look to pick up its first win and goal this Sunday, August 21, as they host Texas Southern. Sunday's match is scheduled to be kicked off at 1 p.m. and will be streamed on CUSA.tv.
 
UTSA began its season with a draw against the Houston Baptist Huskies on Thursday, August 18, at Park West. The Roadrunners and Huskies battled back and forth in the first half, as neither team budged on the defensive end. Jil Schneider had two saves to keep the game scoreless through the first 45. At the half, UTSA was outshooting HBU 7-6.
 
In the second half, the Roadrunners ratcheted up the pressure, as they totaled 21 shots in the second half of the contest. UTSA dominated the time of possession and outshot the Huskies by 19 in the second half but still couldn't cash in. At the end of 90 minutes of play, the teams remained scoreless, and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
 
Isa Hernandez led the offensive charge for UTSA, as the senior captain had five shots (one on goal) in her 69 minutes of action. Kendall Kloza and Anna Sutter also both played a major role in the offensive aggression as the two had four shots apiece. Both Kloza and Sutter had two shots on goal as well.
 
UTSA had two goalkeepers play on Sunday, as Schneider took the first half of play and Mia Krusinski covered the second 45. The two combined to shut out the Huskies and had three saves between the two of them. The shutout was UTSA's third in its last five contests (dating back to last season).
 
Leading the Roadrunners
Three Roadrunners played every minute in the season's first action against HBU. Kloza, Deja Sandoval and Sasjah Dade, all defenders, played huge roles in holding the Huskies scoreless.
 
Hernandez leads the team in total shots with five while Kloza and Sutter are right behind with four apiece. Alissa Stewart tallied three shots while Abby Kassal, Kiran Singh and Dade each recorded two shots in the first contest.
 
Series history
This will be the first meeting between the two Texas schools.
 
Scouting the Tigers
Texas Southern enters Sunday's contest 0-1 after dropping its first game of the 2022 season to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday, August 18, 3-1. The Tigers got their lone goal on a JJ Binder penalty kick in the 48th minute of the match.
 
The Tigers had five players go the distance in the season-opener. Jaidyn Christophe held down the net, saving four shots but letting three through. Victoria Pucci (9) and Hayley Vaughan (25) spearheaded the Texas Southern offense, as the two each had three shots in the match.
 
Texas Southern was outshot by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 20-10 and the Islanders dominated the corner kicks too, holding an 11-1 advantage.
 
UP NEXT: UTSA will take to the road for its first away action of the season this coming Thursday, August 25, as the Roadrunners head to Commerce to square off with the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
