UTSA earns United Soccer Coaches College Team Academic Award

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA soccer program has earned the United Soccer Coaches College Team Academic Award, the United Soccer Coaches program announced Thursday.

The award recognizes exemplary performance in the classroom during the 2021-22 academic year. Over the 2021-22 season the UTSA soccer program tallied a 3.52 GPA (3.48 in the fall and a 3.56 in the spring). The team GPA breakdown is as follows:

  • 25 of the 29 players turned in a 3.0+ in the fall and 26 players had a 3.0+ in the spring
  • 22 of 29 players had a 3.5+ GPA in both semesters
  • Four players toted a 4.0 in the fall while six players tallied a perfect 4.0 in the spring

UTSA was one of 382 collegiate women's soccer programs to earn the honor, which is given to teams whose players combine to earn an average GPA over 3.0.

With the academic distinction, UTSA has now been recognized by the United Soccer Coaches with the academic award in 13 of the last 14 years.

When asked about his players' academic performance, Coach Derek Pittman said, "We continue to build champions on the field and in the classroom. Last year was a successful season that saw our team set new marks across the board and their performance in academics was no different. Our student-athletes have a championship mindset in everything they do and we can't wait to get the 2022 season started next week, right where we left off in 2021. Along with yesterday's groundbreaking ceremony for the Park West Fieldhouse, we are ready to take this program to the next level."
