SAN ANTONIO – UTSA junior backstop Sammy Diaz has been named to the 2022 Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year watchlist, as announced by the Greater Wichita Sports Commission.
Diaz is currently batting .316 on the season and has been the team's main option behind the plate. He has tallied 42 hits and 26 RBI with four home runs to date.
Diaz is one of 97 national catchers tabbed to the watchlist. Diaz is the fourth Conference USA member to earn the recognition this season, joining Caleb Pendelton (FAU), Ryan Leitch (Marshall) and Jorge Corona (La Tech).
Previously known as the Johnny Bench Award, the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award honors the nation's top division one collegiate catcher as voted on by head coaches and sports information directors.
The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, who will be announced on May 19, 2022. Ballots will be sent to the national voting committee at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced on June 7, 2022. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced on June 29, 2022.
The Roadrunners will continue their regular season campaign this weekend as they make the trip to Hattiesburg, Miss. to face off with league-leading Southern Mississippi.
