Roadrunners collect three medals on Friday at C-USA Outdoor Championships

SAN ANTONIO — Jack Turner, Maren Wilms and Maddie Boswell all collected medals to highlight UTSA action on Friday at the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Park West Athletics Complex.

Turner won his second straight decathlon crown and remained undefeated in the multi-events at C-USA meets by scoring 7,487 points to finish comfortably ahead of Rice's duo of Grant Levesque (7,261) and Gus Henry (6,918).

Wilms earned her first career conference podium finish by tallying 4,826 points for the silver medal in the heptathlon, moving up from fourth place to second after crossing first in the final event of the competition, the 1,500 meters. The Melsbach, Germany, native finished fourth in the heptathlon a year ago and also had a pair of fourth-place finishes plus a fifth-place effort in the pentathlon over the last three C-USA Indoors.

Boswell wrapped up the meet's second day with a bronze-medal performance in the 10,000m. The senior transfer clocked a time of 35:32.44 to contribute six more points to the women's team point total, putting the Roadrunners in third with 14 behind Rice (28) and Marshall (15).

Turner entered the final day of the 10-event competition in first place with 4,075 points. The England native opened Friday with a time of 15.21 in the 110-meter hurdles, good for 824 points. He then tacked on a combined 1,441 points in the next two events, throwing 40.79m (133-10) in the discus and clearing 4.50m (14-9) in the pole vault to extend his lead. Turner measured 52.32m (171-8) om the javelin before clinching the gold medal with a 5:06.34 clocking in the 1,500m.

Meanwhile, Wilms entered the final day in fifth after posting 2,768 points through the first four events on Thursday. She led the field in the long jump with a mark of 5.88m (19-3.5) to add 813 points and move into fourth place. She inched closer to a medal after a javelin throw of 30.03m (98-6), entering the final event with 4,058 points, only 12 out of third and 30 shy of second. Wilms then outraced the field in the 800m with a time of 2:24.15 to secure the silver.

Joel McFarlane overcame a disqualification in the first event of the second day — the 110m hurdles — to finish fourth in the decathlon with 6,344 points. The Scotland native entered Friday in second place (4,003) and still piled up 2,341 points in the final four events to help UTSA settled into third place in the team race with 15 points.

The meet will continue on Saturday with field events scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and running events at 5:30 p.m.
