Carreon’s record-tying round paces UTSA on Tuesday at NCAA Regional

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Camryn Carreon matched the UTSA record for an NCAA postseason scorecard to help the Roadrunners remain in sixth place after the second round of the NCAA Franklin Regional on Tuesday at Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course (par 72/6,386 yards).

Carreon fired a 2-under-par 70 to equal the program standard set by both Ana Gonzalez and Nikki Long at the 2018 Austin Regional, helping the Roadrunners stay in sixth place in the team standings, three shots behind No. 15 and third-seeded Texas A&M and eight strokes back of No. 1-seed and fourth-ranked Wake Forest, which currently occupies the fourth and final qualifying spot for the NCAA Championships entering Wednesday's final round.

The Roadrunners entered the second day in a tie with No. 5 seed and 27th-ranked Oregon State after posting the best program's best team score in any NCAA postseason round on Monday with a 5-over 293. UTSA fired a 294 on Tuesday and now sits in sole possession of sixth at 11-over 587, six shots ahead of Augusta and nine strokes in front of the Beavers in the 12-team field.

No. 35 Vanderbilt, the No. 6 seed and host institution for the Franklin Regional, leads the team race at 7-under par, followed by ninth-ranked and No. 2 seed Alabama (-2) and No. 21 and four-seed Duke (+2).

Carreon posted five birdies as part of her record-tying round after opening with a 74 on Monday. The junior all-conference performer had back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4-5 en route to a 35 on the front and then added three more on the back, including on the 10th and 11th holes. The San Antonio native moved into a three-way tie for 14th place at even-par 144 with 18 holes remaining.

Gonzalez logged her second straight 73 to settle into a tie for 18th at 2-over 146. The super senior from Mexico wrote down three birdies in her second round, including a four on the 477-yard fourth, a three on the 362-yard 11th and a two on the 152-yard 16th holes.

Hannah Holzmann is one shot behind Gonzalez in a tie for 20th at 3-over 147. The senior from San Antonio led UTSA in the opening round with an even-par 72 and then posted a 75 that featured two birdies and an eagle on the 477-yard, par-5 fourth hole.

Nicole Polivchak provided the fourth counting score for the Roadrunners on Tuesday with a 76 that was highlighted by birdies on the 382-yard, par-4 10th and 547-yard, par-5 14th holes. The super senior now has a share of 36th place at 6-over 150.

Hunter Nugent closes out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 42nd, as the junior transfer followed a 74 in the opening round with a 77 that included a pair of birdies on the back nine.

The final round is slated for Wednesday and the Roadrunners again will be paired with Texas A&M and Wake Forest with tee times off No. 1 beginning at 8 a.m. The top four teams and top two individuals not on an advancing team will qualify for the NCAA Championships on May 20-25 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
