SAN ANTONIO — Fresh off a runner-up showing at The Bear Brawl, the UTSA men's golf team will travel to the Desert Southwest to compete in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on Monday-Tuesday, April 4-5, at The Cattail Course (par 72/7,334 yards) at Whirlwind Golf Club.
The Roadrunners are part of a 25-team field in the 54-hole, stroke-play event hosted by Wyoming. They will line up against Cal State Fullerton, Colorado, Colorado State, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Iowa State, Kansas, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Nevada, New Mexico State, San Diego, San Diego State, Southern Utah, TCU, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UNC Wilmington, UNLV, Utah State, Utah Valley, Weber State and the host Cowboys.
The field will play 36 holes on Monday and the final round is slated for Tuesday.
UTSA is coming off a second-place showing at The Bear Brawl last week in Waco. The Roadrunners downed Texas State in the opening match before taking Baylor to a playoff hole in an eventual 3.5-1.5 setback in the championship match. Christian Fanfelle came out on top in both of his matches in the event, which was scheduled recently to help make up for lost competition dates.
Fanfelle leads UTSA with a 72.3 stroke average this season to go along with a trio of top-10 finishes. Michael Rome stands second on the squad with a 73.13 scoring average and three top 10s, including co-medalist honors at the Lone Star Invitational last September. Hunter Bott ranks right behind him with a 73.52 mark and three top 10s, including sharing medalist rights with Rome at the Lone Star Invitational.
The Roadrunners have played in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic twice previously. They won the team title in 2018 with an 842 (281-279-282) — which is tied for the third-best 54-hole team total in program history — behind individual champion Sean Meehan's 205 (70-67-68).
