No. 49 UTSA set for C-USA Championship

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women's golf team will travel to Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., to play in the Conference USA Championship, which will be held at PGA National Resort's Champion Course (par 72/6,154 yards).

The Roadrunners, 49th in the latest Golfstat rankings, will compete against No. 44 North Texas, Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion, Southern Miss, UAB, UTEP and WKU.

The field will play 18 holes with tee times starting at 6:50 a.m. CT each day. UTSA is paired with North Texas and Charlotte for the first round with tee times off No. 1 beginning at 7:40 a.m. CT. The Roadrunners will line up with Ana Gonzalez, Camryn Carreon, Nicole Polivchak, Hunter Nugent and Hannah Holzmann, with Morgan Ellison as the alternate.

UTSA is coming off a runner-up finish at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational on April 5-6 in San Antonio. Gonzalez tied for sixth place and Polivchak was ninth to help lead the Roadrunners to their fourth straight and fifth overall top-five showing of the 2021-22 season. Nugent led all players with a fourth-place tie while competing as an individual.

Gonzalez paces UTSA with a 73.63 stroke average, and the super senior from Monterrey, Mexico, has recorded two consecutive and three overall top-10 finishes in her final campaign to give her 14 for her career.

Carreon is close behind with a 73.89 scoring average to go along with five top-20 finishes. Nugent and Polivchak sit at 74.56 and 74.59, respectively, with Holzmann owning a 75.0 mark.

UTSA has captured two of the last three C-USA team and individual titles under fifth-year head coach Summer Batiste, who has twice been named C-USA Coach of the Year. The Roadrunners placed fourth in 2021 behind top 10s from Carreon and Holzmann after claiming back-to-back crowns in 2018-19. The 2020 tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2018, the Roadrunners carded a 10-over-par 874 to finish 13 shots ahead of runner-up UTEP behind a 1-2 individual finish from Julie Houston and Gonzalez. Houston claimed medalist honors after firing a 4-under 212 (73-70-69) to end up one stroke ahead of Gonzalez (70-73-70—213).

One year later, Gonzalez ran away with the individual title to help UTSA rally for its second straight and fourth overall league championship. Gonzalez carded a 9-under 207 (69-67-71) to become the program's fifth all-time conference medalist and help the Roadrunners post a 10-under 854 for a 12-shot win ahead of the next closest team, Charlotte.

UTSA, which started its program from scratch in 2005-06, also claimed back-to-back conference crowns in 2011 and '12 as members of the Southland Conference. The Roadrunners also have a pair of runner-up finishes, in 2009 in the Southland and in 2014 in C-USA.

Five Roadrunners have captured individual conference titles, as Allie Jordan (2009) and Shannon Jungmann (2012) won Southland crowns, while Fabiola Arriaga was victorious in UTSA's first C-USA Championship appearance in 2014, before Houston and Gonzalez went back-to-back in 2018-19.
