UTSA soccer celebrates historic 2021

SAN ANTONIO – Six UTSA soccer standouts earned end of season awards at the Roadrunners banquet, presented last weekend.

UTSA named freshman Anna Sutter and super senior Ellis Patterson as its Co-Offensive Players of the Year and senior Kendall Kloza as its Defensive Player of the Year. Sutter was also named team Newcomer of the Year.

Kiran Singh was tabbed Most Improved Player, Sasjah Dade earned Midfielder Player of the Year and Isa Hernandez – one of the team co-captains with Patterson – was the winner of the UTSA DNA Award.

"Our 2021 season was a major step forward in the progress of our program and the weekend was a perfect chance for us to honor our wonderful student-athletes," UTSA head coach Derek Pittman said. "The buy-in from our team to help this program turn a corner was highly rewarding to be involved in and was one of the most enjoyable seasons in my coaching career. We have a group of high character, selfless, hard-working and diligent student-athletes in our program and that was evident throughout our 2021 season."

UTSA had a historic 2021 season, posting a 10-5-4 season that marked the second most wins in program history and its .632 winning percentage was tops in school annals. UTSA went 3-2-3 to earn the highest finish in the league table in its Conference USA history. UTSA also posted the highest home winning percentage in program history (72 percent).

The Roadrunners advanced to their first C-USA Tournament berth, earning a win over North Texas – their second of the year – before falling to eventual tournament champion Old Dominion in overtime.

Under Coach Derek Pittman, UTSA has turned a three-win program into the historic 2021 campaign and finished the year with the third-best RPI in the conference with a program-best No. 84.

As part of its awards banquet celebration weekend, the Roadrunners hosted an Alumni Game at Park West Athletics Complex, featuring 18 former UTSA standouts competing in the friendly contest.

"It was wonderful to welcome around 25 of our former players back for an Alumni Game and celebration weekend," Pittman said. "One of the cornerstones of our program is celebrating our alumni for the hard work they've invested in the program over the years and making sure they stay continually involved in the building of UTSA soccer. After not being able to host this event for the last two years, it was great to have them be around our student-athletes over the weekend and fun to watch them compete at Park West."

UTSA is wrapping up its spring practice schedule with scrimmages on Friday, vs. Texas State at Park West, and on April 24 vs. Texas in Austin. UTSA is 3-0-1 in its first four scrimmages of the spring schedule, including a 2-2 tie at Houston, a 4-2 win over UIW, and in a doubleheader on April 3, a 2-1 win over St. Mary's [Texas] and a 1-0 win over Texas A&M-International.
