Roadrunners take on UTEP in first round of C-USA Championship

SAN ANTONIO – The West No. 7 seeded UTSA women's basketball team is set to compete against West No. 6 seeded UTEP in the first round of the 2022 Heritage Landscape Supply Group Conference USA Basketball Championship on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Ford Center at the Star.
 
This will be the first time both teams will face each other in a league tournament.
 
The Roadrunners finished the regular season 6-22 overall and 3-14 in conference play, the best conference record since the 2017-18 season.
 
UTSA wrapped up the regular-season in an 86-48 loss at Rice on March 5. Elyssa Coleman led the team with 15 points and Lapraisjah Johnson followed with nine. Johnson led the team with six boards.
 
Jadyn Pimentel leads UTSA in scoring with 232 points this season, averaging 8.3 per game. Pimentel has recorded a team-leading 82 assists and 75 steals. She also continues to lead the conference in steals this season. Queen Ulabo has a season-high 147 rebounds, grabbing 64 offensive and 83 defensive boards. Coleman leads the Roadrunners with 35 blocked shots.
 
Scouting UTEP
The Miners enter the contest 14-14 overall and 6-12 in C-USA play after a 56-47 loss at North Texas on Saturday.
 
Avery Crouse and Mahri Petree put up 10 points each to lead the team, while Destiny Thurman grabbed seven boards.
 
Thurman leads the team averaging 12.5 points per game, while Elina Arike lead in rebounds with 6.7 per game.
 
Tournament History
The last time UTSA qualified for the conference tournament was last year when it faced West No. 6 seeded UAB and lost 80-64.
 
In 2018, the No. 10 Roadrunners defeated No. 7 FAU 83-71 to advance to the second round where they lost to No. 2 WKU 78-50.
 
UTSA has made five total appearances in the C-USA tournament, 2015, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2021.
 
The Roadrunners are 2-5 in tournament games.
