ARLINGTON, Texas – The UTSA softball team (5-11) opened the Boerner Invitational 1-1 after falling to Fordham 5-2 and topping Northwestern State 3-2 on Friday.
Game one: Fordham
The Roadrunners were on the board early with a run in the first. Kat Ibarra started the game with a walk. She then stole second to reach scoring position. With two outs, Sophie Campbell singled to center field as Ibarra scored to lead 1-0. In the bottom of the frame, the Rams recorded a grand glam to lead 4-1.
In the second, Emily Dear singled up the middle with one out on the board. Ciarra Mata doubled to left field as Dear scored to trail 4-2.
Fordham scored another run in the third to push the lead to three, 5-2, and held onto it until the final inning.
Jamie Gilbert earned the start, pitching three innings with two strikeouts. Alexa Williams came in for the final three innings, recording two strikeouts as well.
The Roadrunners had six hits on the day.
Game two: Northwestern State
The game remained scoreless until the fifth. With two outs, Marena Estell hit a solo home run to put the Roadrunners on the board. Lauren Coerver followed with a double to reach scoring position. Ciarra Mata also doubled as Coerver scored to lead 2-0.
In the sixth, Riley Grunberg hit a solo home run to extend the lead to three.
The Lady Demons scored two runs in the top of the seventh from a homer to get on the board, but a popup ended the game.
Marena Estell pitched all seven innings with a strikeout. The Roadrunners recorded five hits on the day and gave Maggie Darr her first loss of the season.
UTSA returns to the field tomorrow to face Fordham and Northwestern State again to wrap up the Boerner Invitational.
