PALM DESERT, Calif. — Michael Rome posted an even-par scorecard to lead the UTSA men's golf team on the opening day of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, which got underway on Wednesday at the Classic Club (par 72/7,305 yards).
Rome wrote down five birdies on a seven-hole stretch as part of a 2-under 34 on the front nine en route to his 72 on Wednesday. The Austin Westlake High School product had back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3-4 and again on the sixth and seventh holes before closing out the side with a four on the 595-yard, par-5 ninth. He is in a tie for 23rd in the 114-man field with 36 holes left to play.
Behind Rome's 72, the Roadrunners carded a 300 and are in a tie with Cal State Fullerton for 15th place after 18 holes, one shot ahead of UC Irvine and only one stroke behind a tie for 13th between UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara.
David Harrison used four birdies to register a 3-over 75 that has the Trophy Club native in a tie for 59th. He posted back-to-back birdies on Nos. 8-9 and also circled his number on the 399-yard, par 4 13th and 564-yard, par-5 18th holes.
Jack Wehman has a share of 73rd after turning in a 76 that was highlighted by birdies on the ninth and 12th holes.
Christian Fanfelle provided the other counting score with a 77 that featured a trio of birdies on the back nine, putting him in a tie for 80th.
Hunter Bott rounds out the lineup in a tie for 106th (+8).
Charlotte and Long Beach State are deadlocked atop the team standings at 3-under par, while there is a three-way tie for first in the individual race between Bryce Waters of Wyoming, Kyle Cox of UT Arlington and Federico Gutierrez of Seattle U.
The second round is slated to begin at 9 a.m. CT Thursday.
