McCalla, Szalek earn C-USA weekly awards

DALLAS — UTSA freshman Trevion McCalla and senior Grant Szalek have swept the Conference USA Outdoor Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards, the league office announced on Tuesday.

McCalla played a part in a pair of record-setting performances for the Roadrunners at the UTSA Invitational last Saturday. He ran the third leg on UTSA's victorious 4x100-meter relay team that clocked a time of 39.34 seconds to break the previous program standard of 39.59 set in 2010 and the meet mark of 39.52 established by South Plains College in 2014. The Atascocita High School product came back later in the afternoon to set another meet record, cruising to a time of 20.99 seconds to win the 200m and topple the previous UTSA Invitational standard of 21.39 set in 2017. UTSA's 4x1 time currently leads C-USA and ranks third in the nation, while McCalla's time in the deuce paces the league and stands 29th nationally.

Szalek matched a personal best in a winning performance in the triple jump at the UTSA Invitational. The senior from Australia skipped to a mark of 15.63 meters (51-3.5) to score his third career win in the event as a Roadrunner. That measurement equaled his PB distance posted in securing the silver medal at last year's C-USA Outdoor. His league-leading mark currently ranks fifth in the nation.

UTSA now has collected five weekly awards this year, as Ingeborg Gruenwald garnered back-to-back C-USA Indoor Women's Field Athlete of the Week certificates in January and Bashiru Abdullahi was tabbed C-USA Indoor Men's Track Athlete of the Week two months ago.

The Roadrunners will be in action this Wednesday-Saturday, March 23-26, at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.
