SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team dropped a 14-9 decision in game three of the series to Charlotte Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners are now 8-17 overall and 3-3 in conference action.
The 49ers were off to an early start with six runs from four hits in the top of the second. In the bottom of the frame, the Roadrunners rallied to make it a three-run game. Emily Dear opened with a single to left. Erykah Guerrero earned a walk and Lauren Coerver followed with a home run to left field to trail 6-3.
Charlotte added three more runs in the fourth from two home runs and three hits to extend the lead to six (9-3).
In the fifth, the UTSA bridged the gap to three. With one out, Guerrero singled up the middle, then advanced to second on a wild pitch to reach scoring position. Coerver reached on an error as Guerrero scored (9-4). With one runner on, Kaitlyn Morado homered to center field to score Coerver and trail 9-6. A flyout and a ground out ended the inning.
The Roadrunners added another run in the six to make it a two-run game. Riley Grunberg opened with a double. With one out, Marena Estell reached on an error as Grunberg advanced to third. Dear grounded out to first as Grunberg scored (9-7).
In the top of the seventh, the 49ers tacked on five more runs from two hits and two errors to clinch the game. In the bottom of the frame, Coerver reached on an error and Morado followed with a double as Coerver advanced to third. Kat Ibarra stepped up and doubled to left field as Coerver scored (14-9).
UTSA had four pitchers in the circle. Jamie Gilbert earned the start, pitching 1.2 innings and a strikeout. Tatum Seith came in four two innings, followed by Estell with 1.1. Alexa Williams closed out the game for the final two.
The Roadrunners had nine hits on the day.
UTSA returns to the field on Tuesday at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
