UTSA ties series with 4-2 win over Charlotte

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team scored four runs on three homers to defeat Charlotte 4-2 and tie the series Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
 
The 49ers were on the board first with a run in the top of the second from two hits. In the bottom of the frame, the Roadrunners tied the game from a solo homer off the bat of Emily Dear.
 
UTSA added two more runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead. Camryn Robillard and Riley Grunberg opened with back-to-back walks. Sophie Campbell flied out to right field as Robillard was tagged out at third. With a runner on second, Marena Estell homered to center field to lead 3-1. A ground out ended the inning.
 
In the fourth, Charlotte made it a one-run game (3-2), scoring on a wild pitch.
 
The Roadrunners clinched the win in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Robillard hit a solo home run to right center to lead 4-2.
 
In the final two innings, the 49ers left three on base from huge defensive plays.
 
Alexa Williams started the game, pitching 5.0 innings and four strikeouts. Jamie Gilbert came in for the final two innings and recorded one strikeout.
 
UTSA posted four hits on the day with Estell leading the team with two.
 
The Roadrunners and the 49ers closeout the series tomorrow at 12 p.m.
