SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men's golf team will travel to Lafayette, La., to play in the 37th annual Louisiana Classics on Monday-Tuesday, March 14-15, at Oakbourne Country Club (par 72/6,866 yards).
The Roadrunners will compete against Houston, Illinois State, Kansas State, Lipscomb, Little Rock, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, LSU, Michigan, Mississippi State, North Texas, Ole Miss, Rice, Sam Houston and Texas A&M in the 54-hole event. The field will play 36 holes with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Monday followed by the final round at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
This will mark UTSA's 13th appearance as a team in the Louisiana Classics. The Roadrunners placed fourth in their tournament debut in 2002 and logged their best finish in the event in 2019 when they finished third. Last year, a pair of Roadrunners competed as individuals with Adam House tying for 16th and David Harrison placing 25th.
UTSA is coming off an eighth-place showing at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on March 2-4 in Palm Desert, Calif. Michael Rome fired a 3-under-par 213 (72-71-70) to tie for eighth, while Christian Fanfelle grabbed a share of 29th with a 2-over 218 (77-67-74).
The Roadrunners own a trio of top-five team finishes in 2021-22, headlined by winning their home tournament, the Lone Star Invitational, on Sept. 20-21 at TPC San Antonio. UTSA also recorded a runner-up showing at the season-opening Jim Rivers Intercollegiate in their last trip to the Bayou State on Sept. 12-14.
Fanfelle paces UTSA with a 72.17 stroke average and the senior from San Antonio owns three top-10 finishes this season. Rome ranks second on the squad with a 72.56 average and also boasts three top 10s, including co-medalist honors with teammate Hunter Bott at the Lone Star Invitational.
