Roadrunners split doubleheader with Miners in conference opener

EL PASO, Texas – The Roadrunners recorded seven home runs as they split the doubleheader with UTEP to open conference action on Saturday at Helen of Troy SBC.
 
UTSA is now 6-14 overall and 1-1 in conference.
 
Game one
UTEP claimed game one with a walk off sac fly to win 4-3.
 
Kat Ibarra put the Roadrunners on the board first with a solo home run in the third. In the bottom of the frame, the Miners tied the game 1-1 from a double and a single.
 
Marena Estell put UTSA back on top in the fourth with a homer to lead 2-1. UTEP gained the lead in the bottom of the frame from three hits as the Roadrunners trail 3-2.
 
The game was tied once again in the sixth from a solo home run from Erykah Guerrero.
 
In the seventh, the Miners had one on third and hit a sac fly to clinch the win.
 
Estell pitched 6.2 innings with four strikeouts.
 
The Roadrunners recorded eight hits in the game.
 
Game two
UTSA defeated UTEP 6-3 in game two to split the day.
 
The Roadrunners were on the board early in the second from a solo home run from Marena Estell.
 
In the third, UTSA scored three more runs to extend the lead. With one out, Kaitlyn Morado hit a solo homer to lead 2-0. Kat Ibarra followed with a single to center field. Camryn Robillard and Riley Grunberg earned back-to-back walks as runners advanced. With bases loaded, runners advanced on a wild pitch as Ibarra reached home to lead 3-0. Sophie Campbell earned a walk as well to load the bases once more. Estell singled to center field as Robillard scored to push the lead to four.
 
Emily Dear recorded a solo home run in the fourth to help the Roadrunners lead 5-0.
 
UTSA scored another run in the fifth from a solo homer off the bat of Riley Grunberg to lead 6-0. In the bottom of the frame, the Miners hit a home run to get on the board (6-1).
 
In the seventh, UTEP scored two more runs from two doubles and a single to close the gap to three.
 
Jamie Gilbert pitched all seven innings and recorded six strikeouts.
 
UTSA posted seven hits on the day, including four home runs.
 
The Roadrunners and the Miners return to the field tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT to finish the series.
