SAN ANTONIO – UTSA's baseball program (2-1) is set to play its 2022 home-opening series this weekend against the University of Seattle (1-3). The series will feature four games, two of them coming in a double-header on Friday.
Originally scheduled for 6 p.m., Friday's home opener had been moved up to 2 p.m. to fit a second game after it. The doubleheader was moved from Saturday to Friday to combat projected weekend weather. Both Saturday and Sunday's games are set to begin at 12 p.m.
The Roadrunners are back in action following a 2-1 opening weekend in Stephenville, Texas against Tarleton State. UTSA was led offensively by outfielders Ian Bailey and Chase Keng against the Texans. Bailey posted a hitting split of .500/.917/.467 in 12 at-bats with three extra-base hits (including his first HR of the season). Keng also had a solid outing at the plate, producing a .417/.750/.533 stat line in 12 at-bats. Keng scored seven of UTSA's 34 runs this weekend and batted in five more to account for 35% of the Roadrunners' offensive production.
On the pitching side of things, senior RHP Jacob Jimenez earned UTSA's first win on the year, as he was the starting pitcher in the season opener. Jimenez went for five innings, allowing only two hits and striking out five, starting his season 1-0. On Saturday, Ulises Quiroga picked up the win for UTSA as he pitched three innings, allowed only one run and struck out five.
The two schools will be playing in their second-ever series against each other this weekend. The only other meeting came back in 2013 when UTSA and Seattle were both members of the WAC conference. UTSA swept that two-game series in 2013 and holds an all-time 2-0 record against the Redhawks.
