SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team continued its winning streak with a 13-2 run-rule game over UMass Friday evening at the Cardinal Invitational.
The Roadrunners recorded two home runs, two doubles and eight hits overall to improve to 2-5 on the season.
Erykah Guerrero and Emily Dear earned back-to-back walks to open the second. With one out, Lauren Coerver doubled to left field as runners advanced and Guerrero scored to lead 1-0. Kat Ibarra knocked it out of the park with a three-run homer to lead 4-0.
In the third, Riley Grunberg hit a solo home run to extend the lead to five.
The Roadrunners added another run in the fourth. Ibarra earned a walk and Camryn Robillard followed with a single to left field. Grunberg singled to left and advanced to second on the throw as runners advanced and Ibarra scored to lead 6-0. In the bottom of the frame, UMass scored two runs to bridge the four (6-2).
In the fifth, UTSA kept the momentum going, scoring seven more runs to clinch the game. Guerrero opened with a walk. Emily Dear had a ground out as Guerrero advanced to second. Emily Johnson reached on an error and Coerver followed with the second walk of the inning. Ciarra Mata stepped up and singled to right field as runners advanced and Guerrero scored to lead 7-2. With bases loaded, Ibarra earned a walk, runners advanced and Johnson scored as the Roadrunners led 8-2 with one out on the board. Robillard hit a sac fly to left field to score Coerver and extend the lead to seven (9-2). Grunberg and Marena Estell earned back-to-back walks to push the lead to eight, 10-2. Coming up to bat for the second time in the inning, Guerrero doubled to the right field wall as Grunberg and Ibarra scored to lead 12-2. Closing out the runs, Dear singled to left field as Estell scored and UTSA led 13-2. In the bottom of the frame, freshman Kloey Harlson made her debut allowing just one hit and help claim the game.
Jamie Gilbert earned the win, pitching 4.0 innings with five strikeouts and only allowed two hits.
The Roadrunners return to the field tomorrow to take on Omaha at 10 a.m. and Boise State at 12:30 p.m.
