Roadrunners claim third place at Tulane Classic

NEW ORLEANS — Keyed by a 1-under-par 71 from Camryn Carreon on Tuesday, the UTSA women's golf team moved up two spots and into sole possession of third place on the final day of the Tulane Classic at English Turn Golf and Country Club (par 72/6,178 yards).

Carreon's 71 was tied for the low score of the final day in the 93-person field and headlined the Roadrunners' final-round 294 — the low team round of the day — allowing them to leapfrog No. 34 Clemson and Texas State in the final standings. UTSA finished with a 911 (311-306-294), 13 strokes ahead of a tie for fourth (924) between the nationally ranked Tigers and Bobcats and just eight shots back of No. 10 Michigan, which earned runner-up honors with a 903 in the 17-team race won by North Texas (895).

Carreon posted six birdies on her final scorecard of the tournament, including four as part of a 3-under 33 on the front nine. The all-conference performer and San Antonio native ended up in a tie for sixth place with a 226 (78-77-71), five shots behind co-medalists Michigan's Ashley Lau and Patricia Sinolungan of North Texas.

Ana Gonzalez fired a 2-over 74 in the final round on the strength of a pair of birdies and an eagle on the 395-yard, par-4 seventh hole. The super senior from Monterrey, Mexico, finished with a share of 12th place with a 228 after opening with rounds of 79 and 75 over the first two days.

Hannah Holzmann ended up one shot behind Gonzalez in a tie for 14th with a 229. The senior from San Antonio turned in her second 76 of the week behind a trio of birdies and finished with a team-high 11 birdies for the event.

Nicole Polivchak tied for 24th with a 233 (78-77-78) and Hunter Nugent, who logged UTSA's second-best scorecard of the final round with a 1-over 73 that featured five birdies, finished in a tie for 30th (81-80-73—234).

The Roadrunners will return to the course on March 7-8 at the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas.
