UTSA to open spring slate on Monday at Border Olympics

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men's golf team will open its spring season by playing in the Border Olympics on Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 14-15, at Laredo Country Club (par 72/7,375 yards).

The Roadrunners will line up with David Harrison, Hunter Bott, Christian Fanfelle, Jack Wehman and Michael Rome, while Carson Gallaher will play as an individual. They will compete against Abilene Christian, Baylor, Bowling Green, Houston, Houston Baptist, Illinois, Lamar, LSU, Michigan, New Mexico State, Rice, Sam Houston, Texas and ULM in the 15-team field, which will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.

UTSA registered three top-five finishes during the fall campaign, highlighted by winning the Lone Star Invitational at TPC San Antonio with a 4-over-par 868. Bott and Rome shared medalist honors after each turned in an even-par 216.

The Roadrunners also recorded a runner-up finish at the season-opening Jim Rivers Intercollegiate with a 16-under 848, which is tied for the seventh-best 54-hole score in program history. Bott fired a 7-under 209 that included a 65 — the second-best scorecard in program annals behind a pair of 64s — while Fanfelle was fifth with a 210 after posting a trio of 70s.

Fanfelle, a second-team all-conference selection last year, leads UTSA with a 71.8 stroke average in 2021-22, while Rome is close behind with a 72.2

UTSA first played in the Border Olympics in 1988 and has competed in the tournament more than 20 times since. Last year, the Roadrunners placed sixth with an 888.
