BOCA RATON, Fla. – The UTSA women's basketball team topped FAU 49-44 Saturday afternoon at Abessinio Court at FAU Arena.
Hailey Atwood led the team with nine points to help the Roadrunners break their streak and garner another conference win.
Atwood put the Roadrunners on the board first with a layup 30 seconds into the game. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Chantel Govan and Elyssa Coleman put UTSA 8-0 for an early lead at the 6:07 mark. FAU scored four points to trail 8-4, but the Roadrunners followed with a 4-0 run to push the advantage to eight (12-4) with 2:26 remaining. UTSA closed out the quarter on a 6-5 run to lead 18-9.
The second quarter was a battle for the ball as the Owls outscored the Roadrunners 11-10. FAU opened with a 3-pointer, followed by a 5-0 scoring surge from UTSA to lead 23-12. The Owls made back-to-back 3-pointers as they trailed 23-18 at the 1:27 mark. The Roadrunners kept the momentum going as they finished the half on a 5-2 run to lead 28-20.
Coming out of the locker room, UTSA continued to find the basket as it opened with an 8-3 run at the 4:53 mark to lead 36-23. In the second half of the quarter, FAU went on a 12-7 run to close the gap to five, 40-35, at the end of the third.
In the final 10 minutes, the Owls scored four points to bridge the gap to one (40-39) with 6:14 remaining. Deborah Nwakamma hit a 3-pointer at the 5:50 mark to put the Roadrunners back up by four (43-39). Both teams continued to battle it out, but UTSA outscored FAU 6-5 in the final four minutes to clinch the win.
The Roadrunners return to action on Feb. 3 when they host Rice.
