MIAMI – The UTSA women's basketball team fell to FIU 81-53 Thursday evening at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
Elyssa Coleman put the Roadrunners on the board first with a layup at the 9:04 mark. FIU hit a 3-pointer to take the lead, but Coleman made another basket to regain the lead (4-3) with 8:34 remaining. The Panthers scored again from the arch until Jadyn Pimentel tied the game 6-6 at the 5:58 mark. The game was tied once more (8-8) with 2:23 left, but FIU finished on a 4-0 run to lead 12-8.
Ceyenne Mass opened the second with a 3-pointer to bring the Roadrunners within one (12-11). Coleman tied the game once more 13-13 with 8:11 remaining. The Panthers then went on an 11-2 run to regain the lead (24-15). In the final three minutes, UTSA hit a 7-6 run to close the gap as FIU led 30-22 at the half.
Coming out of the locker room, the Panthers hit a nine point scoring surge to extend the lead, 39-22. Queen Ulabo broke the streak, but FIU followed with a 10-2 run to push the lead to 23 (49-26) with 7:59 remaining. Deborah Nwakamma scored her first Roadrunner 3-pointer at the 3:17 mark. The Panthers went on another scoring run to lead 57-32 at the end of the third.
In the fourth, the Roadrunners gained some momentum as they opened with a 7-3 run to close the gap (60-39). By the 6:49 mark, UTSA had outscored FIU 13-8 to trail 65-45, but the Panthers finished the game on a 16-8 run.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday at Florida Atlantic.
