COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The UTSA track & field teams won five events at the indoor season-opening Ted Nelson Invitational on Saturday at Gilliam Indoor Stadium.
The men took top honors in four different events as Bashiru Abdullahi won the 60-meter hurdles, Sam Healy claimed the long jump, Jemuel Miller was victorious in the triple jump and Diego Pettorossi finished first among collegiate competitors in the 200m.
Acacia Astwood led the women by striking gold in the weight throw in her UTSA debut. The transfer from UNLV measured 18.23 meters (59-9.75) to beat the field by nearly four feet. A native of Nassau, Bahamas, she improved in each of her first three throws, culminating with a 17.22m (56-6) effort on her third to secure three more attempts. After going 17.93m (58-10) on her fourth try and fouling on her fifth, she unleashed her best throw of the day to move into the No. 4 spot on UTSA's all-time performers list.
Abdullahi collected his sixth win as a Roadrunner by crossing the finish line first in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.87 seconds. The 2020 Conference USA champion reached the final by also posting a 7.87 in his preliminary heat.
Healy leaped to his top mark indoors as a Roadrunner to claim the long jump title, touching the sand at a distance of 7.48m (24-6.5) The Ireland native posted his winning measurement on his opening trip down the runway and now is tied with Justin Youngblood as UTSA's No. 4 all-time performer in the event.
Miller made his UTSA debut a memorable one by winning the triple jump. The freshman from Barbados skipped to a mark of 15.43m (50-7.5) on his opening attempt and that was good enough to hold on for the crown and move into fourth on the program's all-time performers list.
Pettorossi clocked a time of 21.35 to win his section and log the second-fastest time of the day behind unattached Lance Broome's 21.03. The Bologna, Italy, native now stands as UTSA's No. 3 all-time performer in the deuce.
In other action for the men, Christiaan Le Roux placed third in the long jump with a mark of 7.15m (23-5.5).
It was a strong afternoon overall for the jumpers, as Ingeborg Gruenwald placed second in the women's long jump. The reigning C-USA champion leaped to a mark of 6.18m (20-3.5), matching her indoor career best as a Roadrunner.
Oreoluwa Adamson was sixth among collegians in the long jump with a mark of 5.76m (18-10.75).
On the track, Abby Balli finished third among collegians and fifth overall in the mile with a time of 5:03.82.
The Roadrunners will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 22, when they return to College Station for the Texas Aggie Invitational.
