TEMPE, Ariz. – The UTSA women's basketball team dropped a 68-44 decision to Arizona State Saturday afternoon on day one of the ASU Classic.
The Roadrunners opened on a 4-2 scoring run until the Sun Devils went on a 9-0 run to lead 11-4 at the 6:14 mark. Lapraisjah Johnson bridged the gap to five (11-6) from two free throws, but ASU closed out the quarter on an 11-4 run to lead 22-8.
Jadyn Pimentel scored the first points of the second quarter at the 8:49 mark as UTSA trailed 22-10. Both teams then struggled to find the basket until Arizona State hit an 8-0 run to lead by 20 (30-10) with 3:48 remaining. In the final two minutes, the Sun Devils finished on a 4-2 run to lead 34-13 at the break.
The second half was close as ASU outscored the Roadrunners by three (34-31).
Coming out of the locker room, it was a battle for the ball as both teams found the basket and had scored 16 points each in the quarter as Arizona State led 50-29 going to the fourth.
In the final 10 minutes, UTSA opened the quarter on an 12-4 run to bridge the gap (54-41) at the 5:23 mark. ASU then hit a 7-0 scoring surge to push the lead back to 20 (61-41). The remainder of the quarter stayed tight as the Sun Devils held onto the lead to clinch the game.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow to face Colorado State at 3:30 CT.
