MINNEAPOLIS – The UTSA women's basketball team fell to Minnesota 81-52 Sunday afternoon at Williams Arena.
The Roadrunners opened the game with a 7-0 run to gain an early advantage as they forced two turnovers and grabbed five boards by the 7:33 mark. Minnesota scored four consecutive points to bridge the gap to three (7-3), but two free throws from Elena Blanding pushed the lead back to five (9-4) with 4:36 remaining. The Golden Gophers then went on a 16-2 run to finish the first and lead 20-11.
Minnesota kept the momentum going in the second as they outscored UTSA 21-7 to gain a 41-18 advantage at the break.
Coming out of the locker room, the quarter stayed tight as the Roadrunners outscored the Golden Gophers 9-8 at the 4:29 mark to trail 49-27. Minnesota then hit a 7-0 run to increase the lead (56-29) with 1:58 remaining. In the final minutes, UTSA hit a 6-5 run to trail 61-35 going to the fourth.
In the final 10 minutes, the battle for the ball continued as both teams hit multiple short scoring runs as Minnesota held onto the lead until the final buzzer.
The Roadrunners return to the court Dec. 4-5 for the ASU Classic where they will face Arizona State and Colorado State.
