Islanders claim 210 San Antonio Shootout

SAN ANTONIO -- Jordan Ivy-Curry had a team-leading 21 points but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi used a hot-shooting game to post a 77-58 win over UTSA men's basketball in the championship of the 210 San Antonio Shootout, on Sunday evening at the Convocation Center.

UTSA (3-3) couldn't overcome a hot-shooting night from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-1), as the Islanders claimed the multi-team event with a 3-0 record, besting UTSA's mark of 2-1.

A native of La Marque, Texas, Ivy-Curry had a team-high 21 points on 7 of 16 shooting with four rebounds and three assists.

Dhieu Deing had 11 points and seven rebounds and Cedrick Alley Jr. chipped in seven points and five rebounds.

The Islanders shot 50 percent in the win, holding UTSA to 32 percent as a team, going 22 of 69 from the field. TAMU-CC had a 50-26 margin in points in the paint and a 52-34 lead in total rebounds.

TAMU-CC was led by junior Isaac Mushila, who had 21 points and 17 rebounds in 32 minutes.

UTSA returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Lamar at 2 p.m. at the Convocation Center, live on CUSA TV and Ticket 760 AM.

The Islanders scored the first eight points of the game and 12 of the first 14 points, with UTSA's lone bucket coming from a Josh Farmer foul and harm. Lachlan Bofinger's offensive rebound and putback cut the lead to 12-4 and Deing narrowed the lead to 16-6 with his first basket of the game.

Ivy-Curry then got hot, sinking a jumper inside the arc, drilling a 3-pointer at the top of the key and answering a TAMU-CC basket with a bucket laid off the glass. He drilled a 3-pointer around a screen from Phoenix Ford to narrow the lead to 20-16 and Germany got on the board to cut the lead to 21-18 with just over 10 minutes left in the first.

The Islanders ripped off a 9-0 run to take a 30-18 lead as UTSA missed six straight shots and went without a bucket for nearly four minutes, forcing a UTSA timeout. UTSA cut the lead to 33-22 with an Ivy-Curry turnaround in the paint and Alley narrowed the lead to 35-27 with a 3-pointer but the Islanders took the lead to 40-29 at the break. TAMU-CC shot 55 percent in the first half with UTSA held to 31-percent and the Islanders owned a 27-18 advantage in total rebounds and a 30-14 margin in points in the paint.

UTSA opened the second half strong, getting a basket and a foul on a Deing drive and after a missed and-1 free-throw attempt from Deing, Alley grabbed the rebound and sank a basket to cut the lead to 40-33.

After the lead grew to 45-33, Deing cut it to 10 with an offensive rebound and a putback but the lead grew to a game-high 14 after the first media timeout of the second half. Deing cut the lead to 11 with his first triple of the game but the Islanders took the lead to 15 with 13:37 left in regulation. The Islanders put the game out of reach after going up 18 with eight minutes left. The lead grew to 20 in the closing minute of the game.
